On an all-new edition of The Weekly Podioplex, the bad guys kept the newbies at bay, but the Sausage Party and Pete's Dragon still performed well in their opening frames. Their days may be numbered as a sword-and-sandals epic gets a modern remake this week, and one has to wonder if Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad withstand Ben-Hur?

"Louie the Lilac"

Louie the Lilac wants to corner the flower market of Gotham City with the reasoning that if he does that, he can control the world.  It sounds like something similar to what Riddler and Penguin came up with a few weeks ago, but in watching the episode, one finds it kind of makes sense this time.  Also, John has stated he's not a fan of Milton Berle, but in discussing this episode, you'll see he actually appreciates Berle in the role of Louie.  So what is wrong with this episode?

This week, John and Michael discuss Colin Baker's time as Doctor Who, DragonCon, Sharknado, and a collection of Batman 66 themed podcasts you can listen to for the 50th anniversary of the classic TV series.  And being a live experience, there are going to be problems. Pulling back the curtain, you'll find the following:

• The first six minutes were missing from the live broadcast as John forgot to actually hit the "On Air" and as a result, people didn't hear the first six minutes of the show.  

• Plus, Michael's audio was not recorded in the backup recording.  So John went and edited the two audio recordings together to get the best podcast episode.  So in those first six minutes, it sounds like John is talking to himself.

Jaime is sent to act as the governess of the daughter of an OSI scientist.  She must also ensure that the sensor device he is working on his not tampered with by any outside forces.  The wrinkle is the outside force appears to be the dead wife and mother of the two who is jealous of Jaime.

John is joined by The Bionic Book author, Herbie J. Pilato and writer/producer Joel Eisenberg to discuss this first season ending episode of The Bionic Woman.  In addition, John's special guest is Bionic Woman creator and co-writer of the episode, Kenneth Johnson.  The two discuss the episode as well as Kenny's history as a producer and writer that lead up to The Bionic Woman.

 We start with another thrilling science fiction tale adapted for radio on “X-Minus One”:  “A Logic Named Joe,” based on the short story by Murray Leinster that first appeared in “Astounding Science Fiction” in March of 1946.  Fifty years before the internet, Leinster’s story predicted the use of household computers (“logics”) and the dangers and privacy concerns that would arise once they were networked together.  Then the quips never stop when the one, the only Groucho Marx hosts “You Bet Your Life.”  A train conductor and a longshoreman, then a diamond merchant and a dime-store saleswoman provide fodder for a flood of one-liners and snappy ad-libs from the funniest man on radio.

Debbie is a girl who finds herself attracted to wrong people, despite her mother's warnings.  When she finds herself getting in too deep and her life in danger, can Captain Marvel save her in time?  Also, what happened to Captain Marvel?

On our last Shazam! review, we pointed out how the show did nothing new or innovative with the premiere of the second season.  It all seemed like business as usual.  Be careful what you wish for.  As the credits to this second episode begin, one can see there is clearly someone new in terms of who is wearing the big red suit.  John Davey takes over the role of Captain Marvel.  Hosts John and Richard discuss Davey's first outing and draw their own comparisons, from childhood and today, to the portrayals of the two actors in the series.

 John is joined by Dan Greenfield of 13th Dimension to talk with comic artist Michael Allred.  Allred recently completed his run as cover artist for the Batman 66 comic series.  In this interview, he discusses how Batman and 60s television influenced his artistic endeavors, how he approached the assignment of cover artist, favorite cover assignments, and working with his family in the comics field.  Take a listen and enjoy.

 

Michael 'Doc' Allred grew up in the 60's and 70's and was surrounded with the best in pop culture and a steady diet of music, movies and comic books including the three B's: Beatles, Bond and Batman to the point of obsession. 

So it should come as no surprise that he keeps a hand in film and music (He's the lead singer and guitarist for The Gear), but comic books have always been a seminal source of joy for Mike and that joy remains the main ingredient in most of his work. 

Allred first tasted success in the comics field with his wildly popular MADMAN series, which is currently being developed for a live action film with filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. His earlier work from GRAFIK MUZIK was turned into the cult hit movie G-Men from Hell directed by Christopher Coppola (featuring Robert Goulet as the Devil). Other work includes Red Rocket 7, his history of Rock and Roll told in the context of a sci-fi adventure storyl the Madman spin-off THE ATOMICS and his magnum opus, THE GOLDEN PLATES, where he's illustrating the entire Book of Mormon. 

Mike counts the secret to his success to be his wife, and creative partner, Laura Allred, who is is considered to be one of the best colorists in the business.

On an all-new edition of The Weekly Podioplex, we celebrate a fifth merry un-birthday for the show since we missed the actual date last month. In lieu of wood or silverware, we'll take the Ghostbusters, which couldn't overcome The Secret Life of Pets, but did well with a new record and positive reactions. Of course, Captain Kirk and the Enterprise are bearing down as Star Trek Beyond hits theaters this week, leaving us to wonder how well two franchise sequels will do head to head.

We begin our reviews of The Secrets of Isis with this episode.  Cindy Lee reports of the strange lights in the skies over Mystery Mountain.  Is it possible that an alien invasion is coming?  There are those missing people to account for.  And what happens when Cindy Lee herself disappears?

John and Richard discuss the the poor transformation sequence, the lack of stunts, and the odd plot choices in this opening story.  Despite all this, they also both agree that this is a much better beginning episode for a series than Shazam! got.

John sits down with Deborah Dozier Potter, the daughter of Batman 66 executive producer William Dozier.  They discuss his development of the series, the highs and lows, and his life after the series ended.  In addition, they also talk about Deborah's life as an actress, a Hollywood agent, and an author.  Finally, they talk about how Deborah overcame her Post Tramatic Stress Disorder thanks to the love of her dog, Buster, which led to her writing her book, Let Buster Lead.

 

Deborah Dozier Potter is a performing arts enthusiast and patron.  She was raised in a family of respected film, television and theatre professionals in New York City, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.  She worked as a stage and film actress before becoming an actors' agent then starting her own talent agency and management company.  She has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, since 1979 and is an active partner in Hotel Santa Fe and Five & Dime general stores, a multi-state retail business.  She authored the 2007 published memoir, Let Buster Lead, subtitled "my discovery of love, post-traumatic stress disorder and self-assurance".   Ms. Potter is a volunteer faculty member of The New Mexico School for the Arts and a political, charity and arts supporter. Her husband, Earl Potter, is a prominent business owner and a retired attorney.  Their son, H. C. “Cody” Potter, also lives in Santa Fe. Potter previously has served as a New Mexico representative to the President's Advisory Council on the Arts/Kennedy Center from 1993 until 2001 and from 2009 to the present. Thanks to Kliph Nesteroff’s brilliant new book, “The Comedians: Drunks, Thieves, Scoundrels, and the History of American Comedy” for making me aware of a comedian and an OTR show I had never heard of before. Harry Einstein, who is the father of comedians Albert Brooks and Bob Einstein (a.k.a. Super Dave Osborne) had a successful career in the 1940s and ‘50s working under the persona of Parkyakarkus – “Parky” for short. The conceit was that Parky was a malapropism-prone Greek restaurant owner in Hollywood. Parky appeared on the Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson shows, and then, from June of 1945 to July of 1948, on his own show, “Meet Me At Parky’s.” 

“Jeff Regan, Investigator” was one the many shows that Jack Webb had a hand in. When he left to create “Dragnet,” it went off the air. But it was resurrected a year later starring Frank Graham. Not quite a comedy, but not too hard-boiled either, “Jeff Regan, Investigator” deftly balances the light and dark sides of P.I.s from the Golden Age of Radio.

On an all-new edition of The Weekly Podioplex, the Apocalypse has arrived, but it's certainly not the big Memorial Day winner that everyone had hoped. In fact, even with a new milestone under their ears, Disney couldn't save the holiday from a soft start to the summer season. Hoping to take advantage of that performance is a set of lean green pizza-eating ninja heroes on the half shell, but can their zany antics dethrone the X-Men?  

On the home theater front, it's CG gods versus Jane Austen and the undead, with an inspirational Olympic biodrama to run circles around both. Add a little discussion to dismiss some fear-mongering, and you have a new edition of The Weekly Podioplex, only on The Chronic Rift Network.

Just before we begin our review of The Secrets of Isis, we have the opportunity to sit down with the man who played Rick Mason on the series.  Actor Brian Cutler talks with us about his career, his time on the show, how he was the first one cast, and The Actor's Studio he runs today.

Brian Cutler was born in Los Angeles; he has been involved in the entertainment industry for over 60 years. He has had an extensive career in theatre, film, and television, including starring in the hit series The Secrets of ISIS and co-starring in Emergency, The Long Hot Summer, and Young Lawyers. Brian has guest starred on over 100 major television shows and appeared in over 200 national commercials. He has been teaching film, television and commercial acting technique to both beginners and professionals for over 40 years.

King Tut is back in Gotham City with a new set of predictions that includes the identity of Batman.  But just what is the purpose of all these predictions?  Tut doesn't seem interested in gaining control of Gotham City as his new kingdom.  He's more interested in gaining control of the universe and his scheme will ensure this happens.  And where is Batgirl in all this?

Joining John to discuss this episode, one of the better of the third season and a fitting continuation of the Tut storyline, is Shazam/Isis Podcast host Richard F. Lee.

 

Richard Lee is a Batman fan who was first introduced to Batman '66 through the wide release movie and the View Master reels. Richard's biography was published in Who's Who in America, 2000 Millennial Edition. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington, a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Gonzaga School of Law, and a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also a practicing member of the Washington State Bar Association. Richard is currently practicing law in his home state of Washington.

The United States was only a couple months into World War Two when tonight’s episode of the classic comedy “The Great Gildersleeve” takes place.  In an effort to raise money for war-time relief, Gildy gets dragged into posing as a (female – what else?) fortune teller.  Despite the standard sit-com set-up, this takes some very funny twists and turns.  Then Orson Welles returns as Harry Lime in “The Lives of Harry Lime.”  Not quite the psychopathic murderer he was in the movie “The Third Man,” where he originated the role, here Welles’ Lime is more a charming, ne’er-do-well con man.  Tonight, has he met his match in a pair of similarly-charming con artists?

"On Winning"

The second season of Shazam! begins and it looks like business as usual.  In fact, that's the problem here, for a season premiere of a hot Saturday morning television show, the opening of its second season is somewhat lackluster.  Two brothers are vying for their father's attention and the younger of the two feels left out.  But he soon learns that his father loves him enough to risk his life for him.

The second season of Shazam! begins and while there are many changes in store for the coming season, this first episode doesn't seem to demonstrate it.  John and Richard discuss how what is right with a usual episode of Shazam! is what is wrong with this season opener.  Plus, they discuss how the Elders flashbacks that Billy has during the course of the episode are not neccessary and won't be missed on Isis.

“The Romance of the Ranchos” was one of the more unusual series to be broadcast during the Golden Age of Radio. Sponsored by the Title Insurance and Trust Company of Los Angeles, each episode traced the history of a certain district of Southern California from the days of the Ranchos – when everything was still owned by Spain and Mexico in the 1700s – up to then-contemporary times, the 1940s.  Through a series of vivid historical vignettes, listeners would hear how these areas changed and grew to become well-known cities and neighborhoods.  This episode centers on the discovery of the La Brea Tar Pits, that bubbling pool of crude oil where mastodon and saber-toothed tiger bones were found at the start of the 20th Century.  Then Groucho Marx returns in another episode of the greatest comedy radio quiz show of all time, “You Bet Your Life.”  You’re sure to enjoy not only Groucho’s bon mots, but the true story of Bob von Kuznick, whose adventures in the Korean War amaze to this day.

It's very odd that Burgess Meredith returns so quickly in this early part of the third season.  It's even more odd that they pair him up with Ethel Merman as Lola Lasagna in the first two-part story of the season.  And in many respects, it's a wasted opportunity as the two are used more as a Vaudville act more than anything Batman-related.  And yet, this look at Penguin trying to horn in on the horse racing world has more weight to it than Riddler's previous attempt to become the "King of the Ring."

The Dead Robots’ Society was created by Justin Macumber in an effort to offer advice and support to other aspiring writers. All the hosts, current and former, have writing experience of some kind. They gather on a weekly basis to share stories of their individual journeys and discuss topics important to the world of writing. Occasional forays into the territories of brown dragons, taco eating cowboy space ninjas, or random discussions involving monkeys are all considered rumor at best and none of the hosts are willing to admit any of that actually happened.

“Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders” was a kid’s radio show set in “the modern West.”  Bobby was a 12-year-old who had inherited a Texas cattle ranch, the B-Bar-B.  He and his ranch hands struggled against rustlers and other sorts of appropriately western, but mid-20th-Century, hazards.  This episode prominently features a young Don Knotts playing crusty old-timer Windy Wales.  In Windy, you’ll hear the roots of Knotts’ Nervous Man character, who eventually morphed in Deputy Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show.”  Then Bing Crosby hosts the “The Kraft Music Hall,” the radio program that solidified his place in radio history.  Crosby hosted the variety show for a decade, singing standards and popular tunes of the day as well as cracking wise with plenty of guest stars.  This time, he hosts young Donald O’Connor, who’s about to go into the Army.  Bing open with the post-war classic “San Fernando Valley,” then he and O’Connor mix it up with “Small Fry.”

"The Wail of the Siren"

We met her briefly in the last episode, but now The Siren takes the center stage as the villainess of the week.  Joan Collins is one of the better guests and gives one of the better performances in the third season.  In fact, there is much to be praised about this story which has more of the feel of a second season story and also has one of the better Robin/Batgirl team-ups. 

Joining John to discuss what many consider one of the better, if not one of the best, episodes of the third season is writer/editor Glenn Greenberg.

Glenn Greenberg is an award-winning editor and writer. He worked extensively for Marvel Comics and DC Comics on such properties as Spider-Man, the Hulk, Superman, Star Trek, Star-Lord, the Silver Surfer, Thor, Iron Man, and Dracula, as well as Web-based tie-in projects for the film Superman Returns and the weekly comic-book series 52. His work has also appeared in such publications as TIME Magazine For Kids, Scholastic News, Time Out New York, Back Issue, and Smoke. Glenn has also written several works of prose Star Trek fiction for Simon and Schuster, and is now making the jump to The X-Files for an upcoming fiction anthology that will be published by IDW. He avidly covers all aspects of popular culture on his blog, “Glenn Greenberg’s Grumblings” (http://glenngreenbergsgrumblings.blogspot.com), and welcomes anyone and everyone to check it out.)

WCRS Radio Stage returns for the new year with a new story by a new author.  They present an interesting story by Michael Giorgio about a bank robbery that goes wrong and what the hostages have to do - and what they do to each other.

We start off the new year with The Jack Benny Show.  Jack, Mary, and the gang are celebrating the change-over from 1938 to 1939.  They survey the previous year, which included Howard Hughes flying around the world and “Wrong Way” Corrigan, who left New York for California, but ended up flying to Ireland.  Then  before Jack Webb was Sergeant Joe Friday on Dragnet, he was the titular hero of Pat Novak, For Hire.  Pat was a sort of un-detective.  He ran a boat rental place on the San Francisco Bay, but solved crimes and problems to raise extra cash.  Pat’s tough guy, hard-boiled lingo is a far cry from Friday’s “Just the Facts” persona.

"Ring Around the Riddler"

It's the 50th review episode of the podcast!  And what a way to celebrate!  Frank Gorshin is back as The Riddler!  His latest scheme?  To become the king of the ring by taking over the boxing world in Gotham...

Yeah, for this they brought Frank Gorshin back?  As kids, John and his guest were just excited to see The Riddler, but they are not as loving of this episode now as adults.  What's wrong with it?  How has their view of it changed and how did it change from one of the earlier versions of the script?

Joining John to discuss this episode is Dan Greenfield, creator and author of the 13th Dimension website.

SLXLM​​Dan Greenfield is the editor and co-creator of 13thDimension.com, a website devoted primarily to comics and pop culture, past and present. To him, the basic food groups are Batman, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek (the Original Series), James Bond, the Beatles and the Stones. But if he had to he'd be able to subsist on Batman alone. Channel 11 in New York was his favorite syndicated channel as a kid -- you can guess why -- followed closely by Channel 5. Channel 9 didn't really enter into it unless he was home sick and there wasn't much else on. He's married to his remarkably patient wife Wendy and his best sidekick is his son, Sam. They have two cats,Lex and Zod.

Vinnie is out of jail and looking for revenge on Jackie.  Will Jackie take on Vinnie?  Why does everyone think Billy is looking for a fight?  Was this episode really necessary?

The first season of Shazam! comes to an end with the second of a two-part story.  And the real question is, "Was this episode really necessary?"  John and Richard come at the episode from different sides and have very different opinions on it.

Christmas is over.  Its time for some Old Time Radio post-Christmas reflections and preparation for New Year’s.  We start with Eve Arden starring in Our Miss Brooks.  During Christmas vacation the sardonic English teacher has plans to exchange the dreadful presents she received for something a little more useful.  And so does everyone else.  Then on Dragnet we feature the adventure of a con racket that starts in the middle of December and goes all the way through to a New Year’s Eve party.  You’re a detective sergeant.  You take a cup o’kindness yet for auld lang syne.

Interview: David Nykl

Nykl was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to a nurse mother and a structural engineer father. After the Soviet invasion in 1968, he and his family left then-Communist Czechoslovakia for Canada. Upon arriving at Victoria, British Columbia. Nykl attended the University of British Columbia, where he majored in liberal arts.

Nykl has appeared heavily in Vancouver and Prague in dozens of theater, film and television productions. Known for his versatility and depth as an actor, he has also produced theatre and film projects, and in 1994, he co-founded Prague’s Misery Loves Company Theatre with Richard Toth and Ewan McLaren.

He is known to science fiction fans as the recurring Stargate Atlantis character of Dr. Radek Zelenka, a Czech scientist on Earth’s expedition to the “lost city” of Atlantis. His character often provides a foil to the main scientists, who forget the limits of their situation.

He is fluent in Czech, English, French and Spanish. Though his character on Stargate Atlantis speaks English with a Czechaccent, Nykl normally speaks with a Canadian accent. Whenever Zelenka spoke Czech in Stargate Atlantis, Nykl was given the lines in English, and he translated them.

Was it any surprise that Star Wars: The Force Awakens did as well as it did at the box office this past weekend?  And it certainly looks to hold that spot this weekend despite there being four new movie releases to challenge it.  Just how far can this movie got when it appears to be so universally accepted as a proper sequel to the original Star Wars trilogy?  Michael Falkner has all this, some DVD releases, and a look at January movies that could challenge The Force Awakens on a new Weekly Podioplex.
