Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is intended to be the tenth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman, and features an ensemble cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio del Toro. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill forms an uneasy alliance with a group of extraterrestrial misfits who are on the run after stealing a coveted orb.

Producer Kevin Feige first publicly mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy as a potential film in 2010, and Marvel Studios announced that the film was in active development at the San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2012. Gunn was hired to write and direct the film that September. In February 2013, Pratt was hired to play Peter Quill / Star-Lord, and the supporting cast was filled out over the next several months. Filming began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England with filming continuing in London before wrapping up in October 2013. Post-production completed on July 7, 2014. The film is scheduled to be released on August 1, 2014 in the United States, and will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

Simon R. Green

Simon R. Green is the New York Times–bestselling author of Blue Moon Rising, Beyond the Blue Moon, the Adventures of Hawk & Fisher, the Novels of the Nightside, the Secret Histories Novels, and the Ghost Finders Novels. He is a resident of Bradford-on-Avon in England.

“[In] a Simon R. Green book, everything is larger than life—the heroes extremely heroic, the villains astonishingly villainous, the choices between good and evil very clear-cut. Still, if the ultimate outcome is never really in doubt, there’s plenty of entertainment in the journey, and the engagingly-drawn characters.”

—SFF.net

“If they’re making fantasy adventure much better than this, I don’t know about it.”

—Science Fiction Chronicle on Beyond the Blue Moon

Tales of the Hidden World

by Simon R. Green

Seventeen delightfully unexpected stories from Simon R. Green-including a brand-new adventure of the Droods-take us deep into the Darkside, embroil us in the Secret Histories, and lead us into the shadowy places where monsters and demons roam.

Welcome to the worlds of Simon R. Green. In this wide-ranging collection, the New York Times-bestselling urban fantasist opens doors into hidden places: strange realms bordering our own mundane existence and prowled by creatures of fancy and nightmare. Here are the strange, frequently deadly-and sometimes even dead-things that lurk in garbage-strewn city alleyways and grimy subway stations after midnight, visible only to the most perceptive human or inhuman eye.

In these tales, Green revisits the ingenious worlds within worlds that he created for his wildly popular novels. Take a stroll on the Darkside with a jaded street wizard, an underpaid government functionary responsible for keeping demons, vamps, and aliens in line. Enter the hidden recesses of Drood Hall, where the aging family member who creates powerful weapons that protect humankind recalls his long and bloody career. Join a squad of no-longer-human soldiers dispatched to combat the all-consuming jungle on a distant planet. Visit a house at the intersection of two realities that serves as a sanctuary from the evil of all worlds. Confront the unstoppable zombie army of General Kurtz in a brilliant homage to Apocalypse Now. And whatever you do, never forget that there are monsters out there. Really.

Each story includes a new afterword by the author.

You can buy the book here.

Shore Leave 36

Shore Leave 36 will take place this year August 1-3, and will include many fomous guests and notable authors. “Shore Leave is one of the oldest and largest all-Volunteer sci-fi conventions in the U.S. [It] celebrates the best in science fiction and fantasy, past and present.” Trek guest stars this year include Star Trek: Voyager‘s Robert Picardo and Michael Welch (Star Trek: Insurrection). Leonard Nimoy will be making a guest appearance via Skype. The eighty-three-year-old Nimoy is only doing convention appearances via Skype now, and his Skype appearance at Away Mission in Tampa earlier this year was very well received by attendees.

Other media guest stars include Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver, Stargate SG-1), Teryl Rothery (Stargate, Caprica), Eve Myles (Torchwood, Dr. Who), Silas Weir Mitchell (Grimm, 24), and Star Trek Seekers Cover Artist Rob Caswell.

For fans of Star Trek literature, Shore Leave is the place to be. This year’s list of author guests includes: Kevin Dilmore, Michael Jan Friedman, Dave Galanter, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Jim Johnson, Jeffrey Lang, William Leisner, David Mack, Steven H Wilson, Marco Palmieri, Aaron Rosenberg, Melissa Scott, Kevin G Summers, Dayton Ward, Howard Weinstein, and Richard C White. Fans can get their books autographed in the Meet the Pros event.

There will also be science guests at Shore Leave 36, and entertainers including The Boogie Knights, and Luna-C. Other Shore Leave 36 events include an afternoon tea, Ten-Forward Dance, Masquerade/Talent Show, Gaming Room, Blood Drive, Art Show, Science Programming, stargazing, and various workshops. There is also programming for children and teenagers.

The Sixth Annual Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament will also take place during Shore Leave 36. This event raises funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is held in honor of the late Robbie Greenberger, son of Trek Author Robert Greenberger. The poker tournament will be held Saturday night, immediately after the masquerade. This tournament is played for chips only, and winners of the tournament will be awarded certificates. The Sixth Annual Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament is for a good cause and participants will have fun competing against one another.

The Tardis Photo Booth will be making its appearance at Shore Leave 36. “The Tardis Photo Booth is a scale replica of a 1960′s era Police Public Call Box, the iconic time-traveling vehicle used by The Doctor in the Doctor Who series. This fairly accurate representation of the T.A.R.D.I.S. provides an opportunity for fans of the show to be photographed with it. “Along with the box, there’s a full scale, operator-driven Dalek, built to the scale of the Daleks used for the first three Doctors. At times, ‘Derek,’ as it is known, will travel around, interacting with convention members and posing for pictures. Finally, there is also a full-scale talking K-9, introduced by the 4th Doctor. The Tardis attendants appear in costume, covering Doctors three, four, ten and eleven, along with Amy Pond, The Master, and more.”

Shore Leave 36 will take place at the Hunt Valley Inn, in Hunt Valley, Maryland, from August 1-3. You can find out more and pre-register by going here.

News: The Doctor Returns: Doctor will return to a familiar setting in the Who season 8 finale Can you believe it? Peter Capaldi is nearly done filming his very first year as the Doctor. Exciting! And, to finish off, he’s returning to a scene where his previous two incarnations visited not so very long ago — the National Museum of Cardiff. Doctor Who has filmed in that space a few times, including “Planet of the Dead” and “The Big Bang,” but it was used recently visited in the 50th Anniversary episode, “Day of the Doctor.” The reason that’s so notable, is because a prop was seen on set that seems decidedly Gallifreyan. Yes, what seems to be a grave marker that reads, “Rest in Peace. We Promise.” Well, if you promise, inanimate object, then it must be true. But probably not. Of course, the Gallifreyan symbol is what makes the prop so interesting. Who is that memorial stone for? The Master? All of Gallifrey? Or, indeed, the Doctor, himself? And, considering the fact that the last time we were at the Cardiff Museum, there was a very special guest appearance from a classic Doctor, we can’t help but wonder — is Tom Baker set to make a return? Speculate away!

News: Will Harrison Ford’s injury affect Star Wars 7? All you “Star Wars” nerds, take a deep breath. There’s no need for your brains to go all Death Star. UK website Jedi News reports Harrison Ford’s injury is worse than initially reported, and he could be away from the set of “Star Wars: Episode VII” for six months. Or possibly longer. Breathe … inhalers … come on, now … “Star Wars” fan sites are reporting there was an emergency meeting Monday morning at London’s Pinewood Studios, now that estimates say Ford will be away longer than estimated, recovering from the broken leg he suffered when one of the hydraulic doors on the Millennium Falcon fell on him.

Among the options reportedly discussed were temporarily ceasing production, re-writing the script to accommodate Ford’s recovery, or … (breathe) writing Ford out of the script entirely. Excuse me a second (begins sobbing, feverishly tears apart room, looking for inhaler). While we all keep breathing, remember that this is only a rumor and no one from LucasFilm, Disney or director J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company has commented. But even if part of these reports are true, it doesn’t bode well for the film’s planned December 2015 release. As U.K. pop culture site Metro reports, Ford was considered the lead actor in the movie, with Han Solo supposedly being a big part of the plot. Hey, I have an idea. Tom Selleck was almost Indiana Jones. Why doesn’t someone call and see what he’s up to?

Trek News: Nestle foods is trying to make a real-life, Star Trek-style food replicator What better way to make sure we’re all perfectly healthy, be it on a starship or right here on Earth, than to create a machine that figures out exactly what we need, then let it make the food to fill it. Welcome to the future. Nestlé Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) has kicked off research and development on project “Iron Man,” which will investigate how essential nutrients affect the body, brain and gastrointestinal functions. They’ve already added 100 new scientists for the initiative. The goal? To develop a device to scan our nutrient needs, then design food around those needs, not unlike the replicators/previous models for food production featured in the various Star Trek series. In an interview with Bloomberg, NIHS director Ed Baetge said these proposed foods would be more effective at treating vitamin and nutrient deficiency than the supplements we currently use. According to Baetge, the goal would be for these devices to pop up in kitchens across the world over the next few decades, eventually becoming as ubiquitous as all our other creature comforts: “Out comes your food at the press of a button. If we do this right, it can be the next microwave in your kitchen.” This is a fascinating concept, and the applications are positively endless. Not only could this thing be a huge boon to health right here at home — with people finally having the access and knowledge to consume the exact items needed for optimal health — but, looking toward the future, you could pop one of these devices on a future Enterprise and keep your space explorers nice and healthy as they explore the stars. But the big questions — can it make a good cup of Earl Grey tea? How’s the ice cream? Can I get a martini?

Tonight's Menu: Welcome to the SciFi Rewind: Firefly

Firefly is an American space western drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon, under his Mutant Enemy Productions label. Whedon served as an executive producer, along with Tim Minear. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as “nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things”. The show explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. According to Whedon’s vision, “nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today” - See more at: http://scifidinerpodcast.com/#sthash.3OFlyp6j.dpuf
