Welcome to a new audio drama anthology series here on The Chronic Rift Network!  David Binkley is the producer and director of the WCRS Radio Stage program.  He has always loved old radio dramas so in 2000 when , a radio reading service for the blind, took their studios to digital he started preparing scripts that could relive those thrilling days of yesteryear. He assembled friends and volunteers and they laid down the voice tracks with sound effects and music inserted in post production.

The thought was to produce a half hour drama a month.  An ambitious goal considering that there was NEVER a regular radio drama series EVER broadcast out of Akron, Ohio.  Over the next twenty-four months they were able to produce twenty-two stories,  After that they put together an occasional story - mostly at Christmas.

Author Michael Giorgio crafts a story about a company that states that they can end all your problems - whatever they are.

Here's how Tim describes this episode:

"What happens when you discover a powerful emotional connection to someone three times your age? Gregor Collins tells us in his open and honest memoir “The Accidental Caregiver” which was turned into a stageplay that premiered in January 2015. In 2008, Gregor found himself employed as caregiver to famous Holocaust refugee Maria Altmann. What occurred from there was an unexpected journey which opened up Gregor’s mind and heart in ways he could not have predicted.

Gregor Collins is a writer, actor and producer based out of New York City. Like myself, he’s got an extensive career in the world of reality TV. The Accidental Caregiver and other works has propelled Gregor’s career in new directions that have made him realize that living the creative life means taking control of your own destiny. During this interview we talk about the emotional honesty needed to be an artist but also the courage to stop waiting and start doing. Enjoy."

Tonight's Menu

On this podcast, we talk about the Squee Fan Girl Project which you can find out about here. We also discuss Hot Topics acquisition of ThinkGeek.  We wind up our discussion with whether or not infantilism has struck pop Science Fiction, a discussion based on an article by Simon Pegg.  We share our short interview with Timothy Zahn and end with the top five Simon Pegg movies. Please excuse the audio.

Timothy Zahn

Zahns novella Cascade Point won the 1984 Hugo Award. He is the author of the Blackcollar trilogy and the Cobra series (seven novels so far), ten Star Wars Expanded Universe novels, including seven novels featuring Grand Admiral Thrawn: the Thrawn Trilogy, the Hand of Thrawn duology, Outbound Flight, and Choices of One. LucasFilm at times referred to some of the more detailed Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game supplements from West End Games, and when Timothy Zahn started work on a new trilogy of Star Wars books, boxes of West End sourcebooks were delivered to him. At the time, Zahn was writing what would become known as the Thrawn Trilogy, the first book of which was Heir to the Empire (1991). In turn, West End released sourcebooks for Zahns three novels from 1992-1994. The Thrawn trilogy marked a revival in the fortunes of the Star Wars franchise, bringing it widespread attention for the first time in years; all three Thrawn-trilogy novels made the New York Times best-seller lists,[3] and set the stage and tone for most of the franchises Expanded-Universe content. Zahn also wrote the young adult Dragonback series and the popular ConquerorsTrilogy.

We take two trips to England for this installment of Presenting the Transcription Feature.  First, history comes alive in an episode of CBS Is There (later known as You Are There).  This June marks the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, one of founding documents of the rule of law.  CBS’ newsmen and sound effects crews work overtime to show us what it would have been like had they (and we listeners) been there for a news broadcast from the fields of Runnymede as King John faced off with 25 of his barons in their effort to limit his powers. Then it's time to meet the lazy civil servants who make up The Men From the Ministry.  This 1960s BBC comedy pokes fun at bureaucracy, office politics, and avoiding work.
