The next in our series of interviews with the people who made Shazam and The Secrets of Isis happens with actor Jack McCulloch.  Jack appeared as Vinnie in the two-part first season finale of Shazam!  In this interview, he talks about his career, from his start in religious programming to his appearance in the pilot of Happy Days, to his turning down the chance to audition for Luke Skywalker to his appearance in the final season of M*A*S*H, to working with Jackson Bostwick on Shazam!

Jack McCulloch was a character actor who appeared in television and movies throughout the 70s and into the early 80s.  He has the distinction of being there for the start of Happy Days, by appearing in the pilot episode and playing a solider in the final season of M*A*S*H.  In addition, he appeared in such movies as The California Kid and The Big Red One.

Jack played Vinnie, the leader of the vultures in the two-part season finale of Shazam!'s first season.  After appearing in M*A*S*H, Jack walked away from Hollywood in 1982 and opened a business that specializes in wide width shoes - McCulloch's Wide Shoes.  His store features tributes to Hollywood and many cone from far and wide, not just to buy shoes, but to see his museum-like store.

(Sung to the tune of Maniac):

A Satanist who can zip out of chains.
He is suave, and he’s smart, and clumsy.
He gropes all the chicks, and eats his victim’s brains,
Everybody says he’s eeeee-vil.

He gets burned at the stake, but is feeling no pain.
He knows it’s just a matter of time,
Three hundred years in fact, that he’s coming right back,
To suck out brains with his big, floppy tongue.

He can freeze you with a look,
But you’ll just look like a schnook,
‘Cause you should have known by now:

He’s a Brainiac, Brainiac with some style,
And to eat your brains is the thing that makes him smile.
He’s a Brainiac, Brainiac who’s intense,
And his vengeance really don’t make no damn sense.

Yes, in a long-delayed but well-worth-waiting-for Temple of Bad, Orenthal Hawkins (who brainstormed the soulful ballad above), Andrea Lipinski and Kevin Lauderdale, and Dan Persons take on the goofy Mexican horror film, The Brainiac. Bad makeup, crappy sets, and ridiculous effects rule the day! Click on the player to hear the show, or right-click the image to download.

And then…we’ve waited so long, but Ash is back in the stunning debut episode of the all-new ASH VS. EVIL DEAD series, “El Jefe!” Finally, it’s important to remember that on iZOMBIE next time), “Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues.” WHEW!

The Martian continues to hold the top box office spot as a series of lackluster film releases have offered no competition.  But there are two major movie releases set in two popular franchises that will most likely take it down.  The question is, which one will be at the top when the weekend is over?  There's all this, plus Doctor Who and Batman releases on DVD to talk about on a new Weekly Podioplex.

Screenwriters constantly have to do deal with feedback and notes. They should always be listened to and considered. But then there’s THOSE reads. Those reads that say “this script is horrible” or “you can’t write.” Festivals and coverage services can be great sources for criticism but you run the risk of sometimes getting that kind of reaction.

Joining me to talk about how to handle that is Jennifer Sharp. Director of the feature film “I’m Through With White Girls” and an award-winning screenwriter as well, Jennifer shares some of the soul-crushing reads she’s received. But she also talks about how that doesn’t have to be the end. This a great conversation about having the resiliency to block out those who hate your work and finding the people who will love it. Enjoy:

-How do you deal with rejection?

-Can on prepare for the “no”?

-How to answer notes that change the fundamentals of the story?

-The shattering of the vision - what if the reader is right?

-Which notes to take, which ones to throw out.

-Getting feedback from those who KNOW how to read a script/treatment.

-Should you get notes/reads from people who like your stuff or people who are impartial or like other genres?

"Batgirl Network Presentation"

No Airdate

Killer Moth has come to Gotham to kidnap a millionaire to hold for ransom and it looks like he has the Dynamic Duo well under wraps thanks to his cocoon gun.  Will he succeed or will the introduction of Batgirl help to save the day?  Yvonne Craig makes her debut as the Dominoed Daredoll in this brief network presentation.

Joining John to discuss this never aired piece is author Jay Smith.

Comment on the episode here or write thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com

Jay Smith is the creator and executive producer for the Parsec Award-winning audio drama series HG World.  Since 2009, Jay and his company of players and producers have been telling the story of survivors in the middle of a global zombie uprising.  Now in its third season, this "satellite" production has featured dozens of actors across four continents making it a production truly on a global scale.  Since its debut, episodes of HG World and its spin-off series, the Parsec finalist The Diary of Jill Woodbine and The Googies have been downloaded close to a million times.

Inspired by the golden age of radio, Hidden Harbor Mysteries presents a story inspired by stylish pulp era radio adventures like The Shadow, Sam Spade, The Green Hornet, and I Love a Mystery. Performed by a stellar cast, Hidden Harbor hopes to integrate classic radio storytelling with some modern twists.  Jay draws from the work of Orson Welles, Arch Obelor and looks to modern audio dramatists like Douglas Adams and Dirk Maggs as inspiration to create a rich, realistic world of survival horror laced with dark comedy and compelling human drama.

Jay holds a BA in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University and is working on his Master of Fine Arts from Seton Hill University’s innovative Writing Popular Fiction program.  He attends and speaks at various science fiction and literary conventions about podcasting, writing, audio drama, and zombies.  HG World can be heard by subscribing through iTunes or visiting the show web site www.goodmorningsurvivors.com.

There’s two Halloween episodes for your enjoyment on this installment of “Presenting the Transcription Feature.”  First, the wholesome world of small-town America is shaken by a string of Halloween tricks on The Alrich Family.  Who’s letting the air of car tires?  Who’s ringing doorbells and running?  Could it be that scamp Henry Aldrich?  Before Halloween was all about candy, it was all about tricks.  Then Eve Arden stars as Our Miss Brooks, the comedic and sardonic, but beloved, English teacher making her way in yet another small town.  Nothing seems to go right for her, her students, or her principal, as they plan a Halloween party.

Our series of interviews continues as we near the start of our reviews of the first season of The Secrets of Isis.  Joining us for this episode is actress, dancer, teacher Joanna Pang Atkins who played Cindy Lee on the first season of the show.  Joanna talks about her career leading up to her appearing onIsis, her memories of the episodes and her co-stars, and her career following her departure.

Joanna Pang Atkins has a unique perspective gained from a fascinating lifetime of experience. Since she was a young girl, Joanna has traveled the world over, performing as an actress and dancer on stage, television and film. As a natural progression, she began producing and directing theater for teens and now brings her experience into schools with multi-cultural dance assemblies and residencies.

From her starring role as a teenage idol on CBS’ top-rated children's show The Secrets of ISIS, which recently came out on dvd, Joanna's TV appearances have varied as widely as Saturday Night Live, numerous daytime soap operas, The Lawrence Welk Show, and dozens of TV commercials.

Joanna's stage performances have taken her throughout the country, touring in well-known musicals including West Side Story, South Pacific, Music Man, and The King and I, as well as close to home in the world premiere production of Sayonara at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. Performing with an Asian touring dance company carried her to the far reaches of Europe, South America, Canada and the U.S.A.

Her professional teaching background is in dance, ranging from ballet to jazz to folk. She teaches all ages from kindergarten through adult. Her special rapport with children has her teaching them on TV and as far afield as California studios, a school in Budapest, and right at home in New Jersey. At many schools, Joanna’s World Dance residencies have become an annual tradition. For over ten years, she has also been a teaching artist for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC).  Joanna Pang Atkins was honored as the Outstanding Arts Educator for 2014 by Morris Arts of NJ.

In addition to her own performing, Joanna has traveled extensively with her husband, Dick Atkins, a producer and writer of television and feature films, and their son Davy, to movie locations from Los Angeles, Georgia and Vermont in the U.S., to Africa, Budapest, Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Joanna’s biography has been published in Who’s Who in the World andWho’s Who of American Women.

Cyborgs: A Bionic Podcast
The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman were two of the most influential television programs of the 70's.  During the height of their popularity, Steve Austin (Lee Majors) and Jaime Sommers (Lindsay Wagner) would battle Fembots, Bigfoot, Venus Death Probes, deadly duplicates, foreign spies, and bitter cold to protect the United States' interests through the O.S.I. Every other Sunday, hosts John S. Drew and Paul K. Bisson talk about one episode from either series in depth with another fan of the series.  The podcast looks at the episodes, the pilot movies, and the reunion movies covering them from synopsis to review to a look at the mythology of both series.

He went on to study acting at Breck Academy and landed a few roles before landing the one that ultimately changed the course of his life. Shazam!

"The Braggart"

November  30, 1974

Alan has self-esteem issues and compensates by making up wild stories about himself to impress his friends.  But when he has to prove what he is saying, will he endanger not only himself but his friends as well?

This episode bares some similarities with the previous episode, "The Delinquent" in that we are dealing with young men with self-esteem issues.  The difference he is that Alan is actually quite friendly, but his friendship comes at a cost as he weaves his wild stories.  Does it hold today?  Why didn't Jackson Bostwick wrestle a lion?  And did Richard really beat up The Scorpion?

It's all here and we want to hear from you on what you think of the episode.  Write us as ShazamIsisPodcast@gmail.com.

Moral: “Honesty is the best policy."

Guest Cast

Gary Dubin as Mitch

Scott Garrett as Jerry

Steve Gustafson as Alan

Sean Kelly as Tim

Kerri Shuttleton as Debbie

This week we present the final step in the saga of “The Walking Man” contest when winner Florence Hubbard appears on The Jack Benny Program.  Those who have been listening closely for the past few weeks will have their attention rewarded as several old themes and topics are referenced. Then Academy Award-winning actor Ronald Colman and his wife Benita Hume star in their comedy-drama series set at a small Midwestern college, The Halls of Ivy.  Colman plays the college’s president, sagely dispensing advice to the undergraduates.  Lessons will be learned and heartstrings will be tugged.

Welcome to the Dinette! If you have listened to the show for sometime, we would love to have you leave feedback on iTunes. We know not all of you use iTunes, but for those that do, it helps us become more visible. If you don’t use iTunes, your feedback is still valuable. Visit our webpage at http://scifidinerpodcast.com and leave a comment on the show notes or email us at scifidinerpodcast@gmail.com We want to know what you are thinking about what we are saying and what shows you are watching. It’s been awhile since I sat with some friends, had a bite to eat and talked about all the nerdy stuff we love. In this episode of SFDP, that’s exactly what I did.  Two of my dear friends joined me at Game On Comics in Vienna, VA, for a lovely Sunday chat about comics, from books to tv shows to movies, inspired by the Brian Prowse-Gany article “Rise of the Female Superhero” published on Yahoo last week. This was made even richer with the video narrated by Katie Couric. So grab a pal, make a snack and have a listen.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO GAME ON COMICS!! They are an amazing local comic shop that I love and love to support, so if you are in the Northern Virginia Area, please check out! They have games and cards and book and wonderful staff who are always ready to help. Check out their blog, like them on Facebook!! BTW: Which lady superhero would you like to see get her own movie and who would you pick to direct? Drop us a line and let us know!

This week we present two episodes centering on possibly the most popular radio contest of the 1940s, “The Walking Man.” TWM was a contest to benefit The American Heart Association and took place on the radio show Truth or Consequences.  For eight weeks, along with the usual game show shenanigans, listeners were invited to guess the identity of a prominent figure based solely on a rhymed clue and the sound of his walking.  Spoilers:  It was Jack Benny.  Here is the episode of TOC where a listener correctly guesses Benny.  Check out the haul of prizes that had accumulated over the preceding weeks.  Next listen to the episode of The Jack Benny Program which was broadcast less than 24 hours later.  It had had to be almost entirely rewritten overnight because not even Jack’s wife, let alone his writers, knew in advance that he was The Walking Man.

The Bionic Woman's first OSI mission is to infiltrate a foreign country during a deadly civil war and rescue the missing American ambassador. But first she'll have to resolve her own civil war with Jack Starkey - her mission partner - played by Andy Griffith. Joining John and Paul to discuss the episode is audio drama producer, Julie Hoverson.

This episode of The Jack Benny Program sets the stage for items that will referenced over the next few podcasts.  So pay attention as Jack quizzes bandleader Phil Harris about the dubious lyrics of the latter’s theme song, “That’s What I Like About the South.”  Then we take up crime solving with one of the few solo female private eyes of radio’s Golden Age, Candy Matson.  Based in San Francisco, she may look like a pinup and have the most sultry voice in radio, but she’s smart, tough, and fast-talking.

John's got a new story to tell, a purchase from the ledger of the Old Curiosity Shop.  This time, the story concerns a watch the curator recently acquired.  He's not sure if he should sell it.  The last owner was an astronaut down on his luck, having been thrown out of time and being given the chance to change his life.  Would you buy "The Watch"?

"Pop Goes the Joker/Flop Goes the Joker"

Aired March 22/23, 1967

The Joker's latest scheme is art themed, but what is more important to Joker, the aesthetics of the art or the art of crime?  There are a lot of sendups of pop art in this two-part episode loved by many and looked upon as the last real laugh of The Joker in the 66 series.

Joining John to talk about the Joker's last outing of the second season and what the show's stance on pop art is is author and podcaster, Kevin Lauderdale.

Steve tries to help his Russian cosmonaut friend, Vasily (Gary Collins), when a earthquake disrupts a remote Russian base.   Vasilly's fiance is trapped beneath the surface and only the power of a bionic man can save her.

John is joined in the first episode of this new podcast series by fans Eric Cone and Davis Lawson to discuss the episode.  In addition, John's guest is actor Jane Merrow who played Irina, the fiance of Vasily.  They discuss the episode as well as the state of television production today compared to how it was back in 1974.

In addition, John offers a little historical and pop culture perspective of the day this episode aired.

Make sure you let us know what you think of the episode by calling us at 844-OSI-FILE or by writing director@theosifiles.com.

OUR GUEST FOR THIS EPISODE

From Jane Merrow's website - "I have been acting since I was 8 years old, showing off at any opportunity (all actors are show offs, let them not tell you any differently) However I couldn’t start calling myself a professional until 1960, when I started earning my livelihood at it, with my first job as an ASM and understudy in the Lillian Hellman play TOYS IN THE ATTIC, directed by the talented, irascible John Dexter, who told me that the only reason he hired me, was because he could hear me, not true of my contemporaries, according to him.

Suffice it to say, I have been quite successful as an actor, and able to support myself reasonably well along the way. I loved my career, love my career and will keep at it as long as I am physically and mentally able!

I am not planning to lay out my entire career and life here, I will do that over the life of this site and hope it keeps your interest. Suffice it to say, I have been quite successful as an actor, and able to support myself reasonably well along the way. I loved my career, love my career and will keep at it as long as I am physically and mentally able! Born in England of a German refugee father and an English mother, both artistic, both wonderful, but not with each other, I have divided my life pretty equally between the US and the UK, having had or acquired family in both countries along the way. I have received a few awards, including a Golden Globe nomination and had some nice comments about my work and a few miserable ones. So that’s me for a start."

OUR BIONIC OPERATIVES FOR THIS EPISODE

Eric Cone - Long time bionic fan, he can remember watching the pilot episode with his father.  Was recently reunited with his Steve Austin "Action Figure" and is a much happier man for it.

Raven Oak is the author of the Amazon bestselling fantasy novel Amaskan’s Blood and the upcoming space operas, Class-M Exile and The Eldest Silence. She began her career as many authors do–with the lofty goal of becoming the next Anne McCaffrey, Connie Willis, or Neil Gaiman. At the age of twelve, she took her first steps into novel writing by penning a 320 page novel about dragons with all the drama of a typical twelve-year-old. She studied English literature and music in college, and in 2001, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Texas. She later completed her Master of Science Degree in CECS from UNT in 2005. After twelve years in the classroom as a computer and English teacher, she retired from education to pursue writing full-time.

Hollywood legend Tallulah Bankhead gives her final performance as the menacing Black Widow.  Her plot is so simple, even the Batcomputer can't work it out - robbing banks in Gotham in alphabetical order.  As simple as the plt may seem, there is something very endearing about the episode, one that has remained a favorite of John's to this very day.  He's joined in this discussion by Batman at 45 author Chris Gould.

Comment on the episode here or write thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com

Chris Gould was born in the UK in 1983, and has lived in Japan since 2008. His career so far has seen him work as a political researcher, local government officer, sports journalist, business English teacher, translator and magazine writer.

Introduced to Batman re-runs as a child, Chris would watch the show as a junior high-schooler, university student and mid-career professional, his appreciation taking on new forms at every step.

Convinced that Batman constitutes the definitive guide to mid-60s popular culture, and is therefore an invaluable source of study for future generations, Chris took to researching the show in detail, eventually producing the ebook: Batman at 45: The Ultimate Tribute to Pow, Bam and Zap!

The aim of his research is to underline the point that no matter how many years have passed, Batman, through its sheer diversity of stars and insightful lines, helps us fully understand how we got to where we are today.

The Roundtable Podcast

Every great story begins starts with a great idea. But… how do you know if your idea is strong enough to bear the weight of pen and ink? You do what we all do… you tell someone about it.  You talk it through, bounce ideas around, and get some feedback.  You have a discussion.

Now… wouldn’t it be great if you could have that discussion with some folks who’ve been around the block once or twice, who have published a book or two, or edited a few novels?  Now THAT discussion would be fabulous!  Think of what you could learn about your craft, the questions you could ask and the answers you’d get!

That’s what The Roundtable Podcast is all about.  It’s about nurturing ideas, fostering inspiration, and getting the creative juices flowing.  It’s also about mistakes and blind alleys, harsh reality and uncomfortable truths.

Each week we invite publishers, editors, and authors to get on the line with a writer who presents an idea on the table… an idea for a story they want to write.  And then everyone digs in, asking questions, pointing out problems, and proposing solutions.  Characters are dissected or dismissed, plots reinforced or torn apart altogether, and hopefully what started as an idea, becomes something more.

It becomes a story… one we’d all like to hear.

This August 6th marks the 104th birthday of actress, comedian, and entertainment mogul Lucille Ball.  Before there was the television classic I Love Lucy, there was its radio incarnation, My Favorite Husband.  Though her radio husband Richard Denning works in a bank, not as band leader, you can’t help but see the roots of Lucy in Ball’s character Liz and all the zany situations she stumbles into.  But Ball was more than just a comic actress.  Like so many performers during the Golden Age of radio, she worked in drama as well.  This week she and real-life husband Desi Arnaz appear inSuspense, "radio's outstanding theater of thrills," which ran for twenty years.  Here they play strangers engaged in a potentially deadly game of cat-and-mouse.  But who is the criminal and who is the victim?

 "The Brain"

November  9, 1974

Jim doesn't really fit in with the gang as all he's interested in are his books and pulling pranks.  But it turns out he has some things in common with the kids, but how far will he go to impress the gang?  Can Captain Marvel save him and Gary in time?

We come to the episode written by Donald F. Glut who we interviewed on a previous podcast.  He mentioned how there were elements of Jim he could relate to as a kid.  Indeed, being a fan of genre television, movies, and books was not as well accepted back in the 70s as it is today and John and Richard relate to the character in many respects as well.  The two get into a further discussion on why higher powers do not use their abilities to help mortal beings and wonder what role Satan may have in this story.

King Tut returns to lay claim to Gotham City and to get his revenge on Batman.  But he has a new wrinkle in his scheming.  He is looking for his Cleopatra and he thinks he's found her in the form of Lisa Carson (Lee Meriwether).  John and his guests have not been kind to Tut in the past.  Will the third time be the charm for Monarch of Crime as John discusses the episode with longtime Batman 66 fan, Robert Long?

FROM RICHARD'S OFFICIAL WEBSITE:

After seeing Gary Cooper in a movie, Richard Anderson decided that he would like to try his hand at acting. Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, he came west with his family at the age of ten and settled in Los Angeles. After graduating from University High School and serving in the army in World War II he studied at the Actors' Laboratory in Los Angeles, which later became the Actors Studio in New York. After a season of summer stock in Laguna Beach and Santa Barbara, he went into live television where he was spotted by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and screen tested. Ironically he chose for his screen test a scene from Gary Cooper's "The Cowboy and the Lady. " From the test he was signed as a contract player. He gained valuable film experience working with Spencer Tracy, Cary Grant, William Holden, Clark Gable and Walter Pidgeon. He made twenty nine films over a six year period.

With the studio star system ending, he asked to be released from his contract in 1957 in order to appear in Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" which has since become an anti-war film classic. "I have been lucky to be invited to work in well made motion pictures," he says. "But there was also fun in making 'Curse of the Faceless Man,' a horror film now on the late night circuit." Adding it up he has has made over 40 motion pictures including -- "The Long Hot Summer" and "Compulsion" at the same time getting a taste of the "golden age of television" appearing in "Playhouse 90" with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in Irwin Shaw's "The Eighty Yard Run. " He moved on to co-star in five different network television series creating his most popular character in 1973 as Oscar Goldman, OSI Washington boss of the "Six Million Dollar Man." Out of it came "The Bionic Woman." Anderson became the first actor ever to portray the same character in two different television series running concurrently on two different networks (ABC-NBC). He was nominated for an Emmy in the 1976-1977 season.

From 1988 until 1994, Richard helped Universal Studios, CBS and NBC to make three highly rated two-hour specials, "The Return of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman," "Bionic Showdown" (which introduced Sandra Bullock) and "Bionic Ever After."

There’s a lot happening in the entertainment industry outside of Los Angeles and New York. One American city that’s become a hotbed of production over the past 10 plus years is beautiful Boston, MA. And one guy who’s been a part of that production explosion is Chuck Slavin. Transitioning from in front of the camera to behind it, Chuck has worked positions from Production Assistant to Driver to Production Coordinator to Assistant Director building his career in the industry.

When not working on set, Chuck has also been a huge advocate and champion for the State tax credits that are keeping productions coming to Massachusetts. Combining enthusiasm and practicality, Chuck has become a master at networking in New England. This is a great listen on how to network but also a look at some do’s and don’ts when it comes to etiquette on set. Enjoy.

Don thinks that he doesn't need school as he's a pretty good auto mechanic and knows that's where his life is headed.  But when his dune buggy breaks down in the desert, his auto skills are useless and his lack of knowledge could wind up getting Billy in trouble.

We all have felt, at one time or another, that some of the classes we took in the course of our education were useless.  But one never knows what life will throw at them.  In the course of this episode, lessons in ancient history and geology pay off for Billy and Cathy, but will Don learn his lesson before it's too late.  Plus, Richard relates some personal stories of times he spent with Shazam! stars Jackson Bostwick and Michael Gray.  Stay tuned for the story of how guest star Wink Roberts set the desert landscape on fire.

If you close your mind to learning, sooner or later you're going to have it opened and be surprised at just how much you've shortchanged yourself. So if you ever think about dropping out of school, you're only hurting yourself."

The Dead Robots Society

The Dead Robots’ Society was created by Justin Macumber in an effort to offer advice and support to other aspiring writers. All the hosts, current and former, have writing experience of some kind. They gather on a weekly basis to share stories of their individual journeys and discuss topics important to the world of writing. Occasional forays into the territories of brown dragons, taco eating cowboy space ninjas, or random discussions involving monkeys are all considered rumor at best and none of the hosts are willing to admit any of that actually happened.

The Screen Guild Theater, which presented Hollywood films in greatly-abridged versions but often with the original stars, did a fantastic job with The Philadelphia Story.  Their adaptation of the comedy classic about a high society wedding interrupted by the presence of the bride’s ex-husband and pair of tabloid reporters features all three of the film’s stars: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant,  and Jimmy Stewart.  Then that dashing “Robin Hood of Modern Crime,” Simon Templar, makes an appearance on The Saint.  Vincent Price stars as the sophisticated, suave (yet quick with his fists) righter of wrongs.

The Green Hornet arrives in Gotham City and looks like he's gunning for a piece of the action.  But to Batman, muscling in on the trading stamp racket seems low-key for such a high profile gangster.  And what does the foreman of the Pink Chip Stamp Company have to do with it?  Is the Hornet the real evil in this plot or is it the unusual Colonel Gumm with his penchant for alphabet soup?  Van Williams and Bruce Lee guest star in this episode as their respective characters, The Green Hornet and Kato, from their own ABC series in this crossover as an attempt to generate better ratings for the fledgling show.

Joining John to discuss this episode and the most important character who doesn't get enough recognition is Justin Michael of Batman The Animated Podcast.

We return to the WCRS Radiostage with another audio production created as a service for the blind back in the early 2000s.  Based on a short story written by producer David Binkley and Michael Elliot, Elliot drafts the audio play for this take on Sherlock Holmes in a story set twenty years after the last documented story by Sr. Arthur Conan Doyle.  The story always read like an audio drama, so it made sense for David to produce it as such.

We open the CYBORGS Case File on BOB McCULLOUGH. Bob has worked as a writer, producer, and director on some of the most popular TV shows throughout the 80s and 90s, including FALCON CREST, BJ AND THE BEAR, STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION, and ZORRO. His first real writing credit was for the episode, “In This Corner Jaime Sommers” on THE BIONIC WOMAN (he also wrote, “Jaime and the King”).

But it was his story for the season three SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN episode, “Hocus-Pocus” that earned him entry into the Writer's union. But he had to fight for it. And you WON’T see his name in the episode's credits. We’ll find out why. We’ll also take an in-depth look at how Bob broke into show business - a great story in its own right. In fact, we’re going to go all the way back to Bob’s Hollywood roots, from hanging out at ritzy nightclubs as a child, to rubbing shoulders with Hollywood royalty at his mom’s bath and closet store, to crashing THE DATING GAME and becoming an NBC PAGE for LAUGH-IN, THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW, and the TONIGHT SHOW WITH JOHNNY CARSON.

This is an extra long edition of Case File because it not only spotlights a SMDM/BW writer, BUT ALSO serves as great first-hand advice for breaking into Hollywood.

“It’s really an open door in Hollywood if you have what they need. And what they need is smart people who are prepared and who are willing to work hard. If you have those things going for you, there’s no reason you can’t succeed. But if you’re sitting around waiting for them to call you, guess what - they’re busy. Tenacity, persistence, and don’t be afraid to do something a little outside the box.” — Bob McCullough

Daphne Ashbrook is an actor who has probably appeared in your favorite show. With a resume in theatre, film and television shows ranging from “Knight Rider” to “Murder She Wrote” to “NCIS” to “The OC,” just to name a few, Daphne’s honed her craft into an incredibly successful career. She is a favorite among science fiction fans as well for being one of the few people to appear in both “Star Trek” and “Doctor Who.” In recent years, she’s branched beyond acting by releasing several albums “Grace Notes” “All Good Dreamers” and penning a memoir on acting “Dead Woman Laughing.”

Daphne’s latest adventure is writing, producing and starring in a new short film, “Once More, With Feeling.” Inspired by a true and frightening turn of events during a trip to Joshua Tree, “Once More, With Feeling” tackles intense issues such PTSD and suicide but with a humorous slant as well. As you’ll hear, Daphne’s indefatigable spirit is sending her on an artistic journey where she has to relive her fears. This is a great and inspiring listen which brings home the courage needed to bring your vision to life. Enjoy.

"As a child and teenager, I didn’t just watch some of the most beloved cartoons and television shows of all times; I lived them. I was the voice of Lucy Van Pelt in the Peanuts Movie, You're a Good Boy Charlie Brown and other Peanut specials. I was also the voice of Fern in the animated theatrical version of Hannah-Barbera’s Charlotte’s Web, as well as dozens of other voices for animated series. Besides voice overs, I appeared in guest starring roles on most of the television shows of the sixties and seventies, as well as co-starring in major motion pictures such as The Beguiled starring Clint Eastwood and Geraldine Page. My list of credits and photos from many of the shows I appeared in can be seen on my web site at PamelynFerdin.com."

For the Fourth of July, we present two unabashedly patriotic episodes from the Golden Age of Radio.  First, the show that captured the immigrant experience with warm-hearted comedy, Life With Luigi.  This time Luigi and his night school class are to march in an Independence Day parade.  Trouble arises when Luigi decides to add firecrackers to the parade.  Then CBS’s You Are There, the program that takes listeners to important moments in history, takes us to – where else – Philadelphia in July of 1776 for the debate over the Declaration of Independence.

And with a third week at the top of the box office, Jurassic World is the first box office "turkey" of the summer season, beating out Avengers: Age of Ultron.  It's a slow week of movie and DVD releases, but there are a couple that promise to threaten the dinosaurs' top spot.  Michael Falkner has this and more on a new Weekly Podioplex.

Aired Febraury 22/23, 1967

Julie Newmar makes her final bow as the Catwoman in an episode many fans remember fondly.  Catwoman decides to follow the straight and narrow as she enters college.  But the theft of a statue of Batman from the college and a found beenie cap are all the clues Batman needs to figure out Catwoman is up to something.

Joining John to discuss this episode and Julie Newmar's legacy as the Catwoman is View from the Longbox's Michael Bailey.

Michael Bailey has an illness.  While most people would call his comic book collecting a hobby he knows what it really is - a hopeless addiction.  Luckily he has harnessed this personality defect into a weekly Internet radio show.  Mike is a DC guy but likes Marvel just fine.  He prefers the super-hero genre but frankly as long as it is a solid read he’ll try just about any sort of comic.

Mike is a Pieces, (his birthday is February 29th as a matter of fact) enjoys cold weather and enjoys a variety of hobbies that rarely involve the outdoors.

Currently Mike lives in the Fortress of Baileytude, which is carved into the side of a mountain above scenic Fayetteville, GA.  Somehow he has lucked into having a beautiful wife named Rachel, who is very much an enabler and, for some reason, puts up with his dumb ass.  Together they own a small poodle named Boo, the cutest six pounds of evil you will ever see.  His day job is acting like a department manager for a big box office supply store.

Tonight's Menu

Jim Arrowood and M. interview Walter Doty, Write for Star Trek: Captain Pike, and Todd Shawn Tei, Director, Writer, and Actor for this project. We at the SciFi Diner have always supported fan projects.  Quite frankly we just want to see more Trek. If you are with us in this and like what you hear in our discussion with the creators of this project, then please visit their indigogo campaign and support the project. You can also follow them on their facebook page and their twitter.  Below you can read a description of the project from their indigogo page.

This is the story of Captain Pike when he first takes command of the Enterprise and his first mission aboard her. And with your help, it will lead into a Captain Pike Web Series.

Christopher Pike is the Captain seen in the original Star Trek Pilot The Cage, played by Jeffrey Hunter. He was Captain of the Enterprise before Captain Kirk. And his story has never been told in film, until now.

In the original Star Trek Pilot, The Cage, set in the year 2254. Captain Pike and his crew are returning from Rigel VII, where several members of the landing party were killed by the inhabitants.

The incident filled Pike with so much guilt that he is considering resigning his commission. But thats all we know about Captain Pike, and we want to know so much more. Dont you?

This is an independent film project that will be helmed by professionals who all work in the entertainment industry. From cast and crew to writers, director, producers and actors.

THE LEAD CAST OF CAPTAIN PIKE

In our film, we will answer these questions about Captain Pike:

1. What happened on Pikes first mission with his female first officer, and his science officer, Mr. Spock?

2. Did Pike ever go into battle?

3. Which alien race did he encounter before any other Starfleet Captains? We know Captain Pikes father is Admiral Josh Pike, but we never learned about the Admiral and which starship he commanded.

We never learned about many of the federation Captains that we saw in Star Trek TOS or their descendants.

In this film, well answer all the questions youve always wondered about. And youll see many famous Starfleet officers at the beginning of their illustrious careers.

Mentor is mugged in the RV and the only witness is a young boy who refuses to talk.  Can Billy convince him otherwise or will Mentor's attacker come back to make sure the boy never speaks?

"Snitches dig ditches" is a common phrase among the young today, sadly, but it seems to hold true with young Larry Burns.  In this episode, John and Richard discuss the responsibility of youth to step forward and report wrongdoing, the question of powerful beings granting insight into potential danger, and the difficult stunts Jackson Bostwick had to perform.

Dan Persons says:

No life is forever, not even that of the man who played immortal vampires, mouldering corpses, and psychotic satanists. Christopher Lee had so permanently placed his mark on the world of fantastic film that his death this past week sent a shock wave through film fandom, so assured were we that he’d always be around to bring his wit, gravity, and class to the likes of Dracula, Saruman and Kharis.

In the wake of his loss, Cinefantastique contributors Ted Newsom, Steve Biodrowski, Lawrence French, and Dan Persons got together to reminisce about encounters with the legendary actor, share some famous and not-so-famous anecdotes about his work and life, and evaluate his contribution to the worlds of horror and fantasy. Our long delayed look at the various incarnations of the Doctors on Doctor Who continues with a discussion of the Peter Davison era.  Having some great shoes to fill, Davison had his work cut out for him, but he managed nicely in the three years he played the role.  John is joined by Keith DeCandido and Krissy Myers to discuss the companions, the Doctor's story arc through the three years culminating in "Caves of Androzani", the Fifth Doctor as a bridge between the old and new series, and of course, episodes to watch out for.  We even remembered to talk about The Master.  Well, Keith and Krissy did.

Dashiell Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles, the supposedly-retired PI and his socialite wife, heroes of his mystery novel The Thin Man, appeared on film, television, and, of course, radio.  The New Adventures of The Thin Man was a radio incarnation that emphasized the duo’s trademark witty repartee and underplayed the criminal violence.  This episode is about a missing dog, but still manages to work in boxing and gambling.  Then Old Time Radio’s premier science fiction anthology series, X Minus One, adapts a classic tale by Robert Heinlein, “The Roads Must Roll.” In a future where the highways became so crowded that we gave up cars in exchange for high-speed conveyor belt roads as our preferred mode of transport, one man stands alone against radicals seeking to take down the system.
